IOHP Newsletter Submission Guidelines (Updated 01/11/2008)

The IOHP newsletter is a quarterly publication for members of the International Order of Horror Professionals. The IOHP is an organization that welcomes fans of the horror genre as well as professionals working in the fields of literature, art, multimedia and film.

Each issue will provide informative artwork, articles, columns, interviews, poetry, short fiction, op-ed pieces, reviews, job opportunities and writing markets. Our goal is to focus on all aspects of the horror genre. We welcome submissions from both unpublished and published IOHP members. Please be sure to read these guidelines in their entirety prior to submitting anything to the IOHP newsletter.

The main rules are:

(1) NO attachments are accepted. Any attachments received will be intercepted and automatically deleted without being read.

(2) Where noted, DO query before sending in a full submission. As a rule of thumb, DO query for articles, op-ed pieces, interviews and unassigned book or movie reviews. There is no need to query for humor, poetry or fiction (unless your fiction piece exceeds 2,000 words).

(3) The IOHP newsletter accepts previously published pieces.

(4) Due to the volume of submissions, please allow 30 days for a response. It is likely you won't have to wait that long, but please do not query regarding your submission until the full 30 days have passed.

(5) Accepted submissions will be published according to order of acceptance as well as space available in the newsletter.

ARTICLES/INTERVIEWS

Articles must focus on some aspect of the horror genre or disciplines within the genre, including but not limited to artwork, literature, multimedia or films. Articles may not be longer than 2,000 words. Interviews must be pre-approved and should focus on individuals (either novice or professional) who are connected to the horror genre in some way. All articles and interviews must be queried in advance -- please do not send an entire article or interview unless your query has been previously accepted by the IOHP newsletter.

The IOHP accepts reprints. We require that you hold the copyright to the article prior to submission to us.

Send queries via e-mail only -- snail mail queries are not accepted. E-mail queries should be sent to tbq@retsej.com. Use "Query" in the subject line and paste the query directly into the e-mail message area. Please note if the article is previously unpublished or if it is a reprint (if so, note where the article was published before.)

Your query will be accepted or rejected via e-mail response. If your query is accepted, send your article/interview in the body of an e-mail -- NO attachments will be accepted and they will be deleted automatically. With your article/interview, include your name and e-mail address.

The IOHP newsletter reserves one-time electronic and print rights to publish the article. The issue in which your article appears will be copyrighted via the IOHP newsletter. However, all other copyrights remain with the author. Authors are free to publish their articles elsewhere.

Articles/Interviews are archived for one year on our Web site. If the article is accepted for publication, payment will be made to the author in the form of advertising space via a 50-word text ad of your choice in our members-only newsletter.

DARK HUMOR

Dark humor articles must focus on the horror genre in some way or the trials and tribulations of producing creative work in the genre. Offbeat or intriguing humor is encouraged. Submissions should be under 1,500 words. Send your dark humor item pasted directly in an e-mail message to tbq@retsej.com. Use the subject heading "Dark Humor." Please include your name and e-mail address.

We will either accept or reject your submission. If accepted, we ask for one-time rights to publish the submission. We copyright the issue where the humor piece appears, but all other copyrights remain with the author. Authors are free to publish their pieces elsewhere. Dark humor articles are archived for one year on our Web site.

If the dark humor piece is accepted for publication, payment will be made to the author in the form of advertising space via a 50-word text ad of your choice in our members-only newsletter.

HORROR BOOK OR MOVIE REVIEWS

The IOHP newsletter will accept reviews of books and movies in the horror genre. Reviewers must be willing to review both print and electronic books. Each review is 200-500 words and must offer an objective assessment of the book or movie reviewed.

All members of IOHP are encouraged to submit book or movie reviews. Before sending a review, query us first to be sure we do not already have a pending review on file for the book or movie in question.

Send all review queries and reviews to tbq@retsej.com with “REVIEW” in the subject line. If we assign a review, the book reviewer will keep the book assigned to them and may also elect to receive additional payment in the form of one 50-word text ad per each published review in our members-only newsletter.

Book or movie reviews are archived for one year on our Web site.

DARK/HORROR POETRY

The IOHP newsletter may run poetry in each quarterly issue. Poetry must be dark in nature and keeping with the theme of the horror genre. We accept any form of poetry, but if you must rhyme, please be sure you are skilled in its presentation. Twisted, humorous poetry of a dark nature is encouraged. Submissions should be no longer than 24 lines.

Send your poetry pasted directly in an e-mail message (please, NO attachments!) to
tbq@retsej.com with the subject heading of "Poetry." Please include your name and e-mail address.

We will either accept or reject your submission. If accepted, we ask for one-time electronic rights to publish the submission. We copyright the issue where your poetry appears, but all other copyrights remain with the author. Authors are free to publish their poetry elsewhere. Poems are archived for one year on our Web site.

If your poem is accepted for publication, payment will be made to the author in the form of advertising space via a 100-word text ad of your choice for one issue of our members-only newsletter.

FICTION

The IOHP welcomes horror fiction pieces. Fiction must be dark and consistent with the horror genre. We prefer character-driven stories over plot-driven stories. We are open to horror erotica, but will not run any pieces that touch on questionable or gratuitous subjects that are not germane to the story itself. Subjects such as bestiality and pedophilia in fiction stories will not be accepted. The editorial board makes the final decision on what will and will not be accepted as publishable fiction in the newsletter.

Submissions should be no more than 2,500 words. On occasion, we will run a piece longer than 2,500 words in monthly parts, but this is the exception rather than the rule. If your fiction piece is longer than 2,500 words, query first to see what our editorial schedule will allow before sending in the piece.

Send your fiction pasted directly in an e-mail message (please, NO attachments!) to
tbq@retsej.com with the subject heading "Fiction." Please include your name and e-mail address.

We will either accept or reject your submission. If accepted, we ask for one-time rights to publish the submission in our members-only newsletter. We copyright the issue where your fiction appears, but all other copyrights remain with the author. Authors are free to publish their fiction elsewhere. Fiction pieces are archived for one year on our Web site.

If your fiction piece is accepted for publication, payment will be made to the author in the form of advertising space via a 100-word text ad of your choice that will run in our quarterly newsletter.
